Our Commercial Photo Restoration Work
Our commercial photo work often involves routine photo repair, photo restoration and photo refurbishing. We also do work improving photos (including changing their size and color profiles) for use in video. We work on document restorations and do photo editing work. For insurance companies or loss adjusters we assess water, fire and smoke damage and we prepare detailed photo loss reports advising on the best options for separation and drying - and restoration and repair - given the state of the photos. For galleries we restore and refurbish photo and other art images and custom print on the finest archive quality cotton papers. |
Water damaged or water "blocked" photos
Water can damage photographs through floods or rain ingress or - more usually - as a by-product of fire extinguishing efforts. As well as warping and "tide marking," photos can become fused or "blocked." Once resin coated images or plastic negatives are fused one to the other (or to glass) for any reason - and once the emulsion has dried – the images are extremely difficult to separate.
Disaster recovery and conservation professionals typically advise not to dry photographs or negatives that have become wet and stuck one to another. Instead, they advise that the images be separated carefully while wet (if possible) or kept wet or even frozen – locking in the moisture but retarding mold – until careful separation can be carried out. Certain protocols developed recently by American Institute of Conservationist technicians technicians address water soaked photos and may improve the recovery rate of blocked photographs or negatives: Water Damaged Photos, Slides and Negatives. |
