The Photo Repair Process, Explained

Most photo repair projects start with an email or with a phone call to Peter.
  • Peter asks questions about the image, what the problem is, then if possible will give an estimate of the cost of repair.
  • Sometimes clients upload or email a snapshot of the old photo taken with their phone, or better yet, a scanned copy.  (Not essential tho' - you can stop by or send it to us.)
  • Our technician-artists take a look and give you a firm estimate, along with a brief description of the work needed.
  • We do the repair - usually in just a few days - and email a good quality PDF preview file showing the original image and the fixed version for approval - or final adjustments.
  • For photographs delivered to us, there will be no deposit and the client only pays when satisfied.  For digital images sent to us by email or drop box, there may be a deposit.
  • Finally, we custom print the image, using your choice of Epson paper and inks.  The choice of paper is important - often we follow the original - but many clients like our super-premium, heavy weight, acid-free, 100% cotton fiber paper.

Some Images are just too important to throw away!

Is Your Photo Too Hard to Fix?

We can crack most old photo problems.

There are just a couple issues with photographs that can be helped - but not completely cured.

An image which is out of focus will remain blurry no matter what! Although, careful sharpening can mitigate things. Photographs on heavily patterned paper, or newspaper and magazine images, cannot usually be rendered very sharp (although can be improved by clever scanning and careful surface blurring).

Very small digital images may need to be rescanned. Finally, an image which has lost all detail in the faces could, possibly, be a bridge too far - unless you have another photo of the person taken around the same time.

Restoration
Faded or discolored images can happen through time, sun exposure or ozone, or because of poor initial chemical processing. Our photo restoration techniques can make things look like new!

Adding Color
More art than technology, black and white images can be digitally hand colored to bring out original color detail.  Or if fading or staining of a color photo is extreme, then selected areas can be targeted.

Which paper is best for my photo repair?

Picture

Once your photograph is repaired it needs to be printed using premium, wide-gamut, fade resistant inks and the best papers to ensure that the photo you approve is the photo you receive.  We also take the time to match your photo with the proper paper.

Newer photographs with highly saturated colors and strong blacks can look very good with a quality glossy paper. If the subject is a baby, a couple, or a wedding portrait then an ultra premium luster shows the image up well.

For older photographs, larger prints, special photo projects and art prints, a nice, heavy weight, cotton based, acid-free fine art archive paper works very well.

And for every repaired photograph in between, we have semi-gloss, flat matte, and specialty papers like hot and cold press brights, and a range of "metallic" finish papers.

DID YOU KNOW? If you need a digital file of your repaired photograph it's never a problem.  Our previews use the Adobe PDF format, which can easily and quickly be read by the free Adobe Reader. Once fixed, we can supply your restored image in pretty much any format, although  JPEG (compressed), TIFF (uncompressed) and PNG (optimized for screens) are the most popular. Archivists prefer TIFFs, although not all programs recognize them and research suggests that the human eye cannot detect any quality difference with JPEGs saved at the highest quality settings (which is how we supply them).
